Synchronicity is a wondrous thing, and the creative pairing of Luke Brancaccio (Brancaccio & Asher, Suicide Sports Club) with Simon Berry (Platipus Records, Art Of Trance, Union Jack) after a chance meeting at a London house party, is perhaps a sign that the universe is conspiring to guide electronic music on to a new and exciting path. The past 6 months has seen them unveil two crucial releases – ‘Oblivion’ on John Digweed’s Bedrock Records and ‘Wake Up’ on Yousef’s Circus Recordings – both receiving much critical acclaim, and firmly positioning this experienced duo as one of the most exhilarating new collaborative projects around. Having recently remixed Martin Merkel’s Little Wonder on Platipus, they return to Bedrock with their third, highly accomplished creation – ‘Close Your Eyes’ – featuring the compelling vocals of JJD, which reached No.1 in the Beatport Top 100 Progressive Chart. John Digweed and Nick Muir’s brilliant reworking of the original went on to top the DJ Magazine Techno Chart.

Martin Merkel – Biography 2018

A somewhat mysterious figure within the European Techno scene, this Baden Baden-based maverick German DJ/Producer has often stepped away from the egotistical glare of publicity, preferring to let his music to do the talking.

Originally inspired as an artist by the experimental attitude of Italo Disco and the embryonic German Techno scene, via parties at the likes of Dorian Grey and Omen (Frankfurt) and Tresor (Berlin), Martin Merkel’s nascent career saw him develop an early love of analogue synthesisers – and saw him fill his studio with a desirable collection of Moog, Roland and Waldorf machinery. A self-taught musician, he learnt by experimentation, buying equipment without knowing how it all worked.

“That was so funny and crazy at that time, but I really wanted to produce techno music. I never forget when I heard techno for the first time. At that moment it was clear to me where my journey would go.” – Martin Merkel

As a dedicated vinyl only DJ (there was no mp3 or Traktor software with sync back then), Martin played in clubs every weekend until 2004, when he withdrew and focused more on expanding his production career. This had started with his debut release in 1999 (M-Faces ‘1400 Feet’) a Trance track released on Deep Blue Recordings. As he steadily established himself as a master of sonic excellence and musicality, his creations were snapped up for release on the likes of Monkey Business, Traumwelten (check ’Fahnenkind’), Schallamt, Cinematique, Bonzai, Secondary Tones (check ’Aufbruch ins Land der Elfen’ and ’Agape’), JOOF (check ’Voyager feat. Fe Malefiz’), Monkey Business, and Neverending.

In 2012 he launched his own Shelter 54 label, giving him the artistic freedom to release the abundance of music he was constantly creating, without having to wait around and be delayed by other label’s busy release schedules. This new platform also allowed Martin to produce and release different styles of music under various guises – everything from Deep House, Nu Disco, Tech House, Electro to Progressive House. The Shelter 54 label family was also founded to help other artists release their music and the label has featured the likes of Oliver Gross, Nephtek, Noemi Black, Phirakus, Hortek, Fe Malefiz, amongst others.

In recent years Martin Merkel has moved towards a more compact, travel-friendly digital studio set-up, but his love of synthesisers remains a defining characteristic of his uniquely distinctive musical output today, and his new ‘Constantin’ (Platipus) album is a perfect testament to that love. Martin Merkel emerged from the shadows at the end of 2017 with his first single release for Simon Berry’s legendary Platipus label. This was an introduction for many people and taste of Martin’s self-described brand of “Soulful Techno”, steeped in complex emotions and with an attention to musical detail that comes from many years of dedication to his chosen craft.

In February 2018, Martin Merkel’s ‘Constantin’ album – a creative project inspired by his emotional journey over the past year and honouring the recent birth of his son –is released. Martin’s joining forces with the legendary Platipus imprint also marks a bold new direction in the label’s evolution, as its creative direction moves towards an exciting Tech House / Melodic Techno fusion. The future looks very exciting indeed.

Tremor aka Steve Gibbs.
Steve Gibbs was born in Adelaide, Australia in July 1976 and from an early age was drawn to music. Steve has produced many styles of music from hard trance to techno but has established himself in recent times as a very well respected uplifting trance producer. Steve has released numerous singles for well respected labels under various artist names including Antarctica (React), Altitude (Bonzai) and Steve Gibbs (Five AM/Eve). In the last year things have really taken off with Steve’s Altitude project being signed onto Sony and looking destined for huge success with the club hit ‘Excession’. ‘Excession’ was one of the Ibiza anthems of the year, with huge support from DJs across the board including Paul Oakenfold, Sasha and Graham Gold. The track has been licensed onto to several major compilations including Pete Tong’s Essential Selection Ibiza 2000, Slinky Technique, Gatecrasher and was also included on Judge Jules’ first ‘Clubbed’ album.

The follow up single ‘Nightstalker’ was licensed for Paul Oakenfold’s new ‘Travelling’ album on the basis of a single acetate. Steve has also had two top 50 singles with his Antarctica project on React, which has received a lot of press/radio play and enjoyed support from Nick Warren, Seb Fontaine, Carl Cox and Paul van Dyk amongst others.

In addition to these projects Steve has also released the ‘Electronicat’ single on Platipus, including a mix by current techno golden boys Filterheadz. He also runs his own label, Middle Ground Records.
In addition to this, Steve DJs in various cities around the world. Past gigs have included trips to Hong Kong, New York, Milan and London. Steve describes his DJing style as a blend of all kinds of house music, from deep/tech house through to driving, uplifting progressive, playing the best music from all genres and playing the style to fit the occasion.

He settled back down to do some producing for Platipus in 2002 and promptly unleashed the double A-Side of Tears In The Rain/Marrakech. A piece which helped define the direction in which Platipus’ sound was travelling, the EP incorporated two sides of achingly melodic electronica. Indeed, ‘Tears In The Rain’ was turned into something of an unofficial anthem by Gatecrasher resident Nick Riley.Next, Gibbs will be mixing the as-yet-untitled chillout album upcoming on Platipus. Including tracks from Timo Maas, Paul Oakenfold and Sinead O’Connor as well as stacks of unreleased material.

Jamnesia aka Dino Lenny.
Dino Lenny starts very young as a radio deejay in a small town of the South of Italy, Cassino. He grows up within an interesting group of lads such as Savino Martinez and Claudio Coccoluto. In London his career gets a boost thanks to a long series of important remixes: Inxs, Planet Funk, Underworld, and the collaboration with The Housemartins, Wu Tang Clan, Scissors Sisters & Madonna just to mention a few names. His productions are just as interesting as the remixes and Dino Lenny earns for three time in a row the label of ” Essential New Tune” on Radio One (BBC) by the king of the dance music: Pete Tong – who will also refer to him as a “genius”. Considered “The Wizard of the Electronic music” by the Chemical Brothers, Dino Lenny explores the full range of his potentialities and starts singing. With a simplifying abbreviation of his name, Dino records the single “Call me” which becomes a terrifically popular track all over Europe. The British press defines his vocal talent as a halfway between the Talking Heads and Ian Dury. Dino shows up a perfect Serpico style and sings in front of his raving fans at Tops of the Pops.
The successful single gives just a hint of what will happen with the release of the album “Might”, in 2004.
Whilst busy with more important collaborations, Dino is invited by Hardage to take part to his project which includes Jocelyn Brown and Maxi Priest , Level 42 and Peter Gabriel, amongst the others.
In 2006 he produces with Steve Lawler under the name Sladly the well received “Unicorn”
A few months later Dino Lenny flies to Montreal to open the UNICEF concert – which gathers more than 7,000 people .
In 2011 “I Wanna be Like Talking Heads/ A Dj Deep Inside” after the approval of David Byrne and the band is out on the legendary label Stricly Rhythm including mixes by Pirupa & Shadow child and was included in more than 200 charts on Beatport only.
Between 2012 and 2014 Dino gets released on Suara, Exploited and OFF Recordings and 2015 is going to look strong with EP’s on Connaisseur, Ellum and Crosstown Rebels sister label Rebellion. Meanwhile mr Lenny keeps his most loved Fine Human Label warm eclectic and prolific!

Greg Murray first got involved with writing and performing music back in 1996. After spending 3 years teaching himself to play the guitar and writing tunes with a band, he bought his first PC with the intention of using it to record the music they created rather than recording it in a studio environment.

It was 1999 and the year that trance became mainstream. After hearing the kind of sounds that Paul Van Dyk and Ferry Corsten were creating, the guitar was put in its case and never played again. The PC was used to produce dance music and in 2001 he released a 12″ white label which created some interest from DJs like Paul Van Dyk and Graham Gold.

Greg’s first solo production ‘I Feel Loved’ is upcoming on legendary UK label Platipus. A peak-time trancer aimed squarely at the summer season, this is a record set to bring Passion to its knees with a mixture of uplifting melodies and crisp percussion.
